Chapter 21: Demonic Calamity IV

“Please, you need to listen to me!” Kai exclaimed as he stepped forward. Placing a hand on his chest, he spoke emphatically. “We need to assemble a squad of Inquisitors right away!”

Kai had rushed his way straight back to Lux, bounding over the busy streets of both the outer city and inner city of Albus despite all the confused stares that he drew his way, all because he knew he had to act quickly. When he entered the Grand Temple of Light, he was fortuitous enough to find one of the people he needed to find in a short amount of time.

After all, even though Kai was an Inquisitor, he didn’t have the authority to bring a team with him out on missions without the permission of one of the Seven Cardinals of the Virtues, or even Archbishop Walden himself.

Perhaps if Kai was more of a veteran— having been given a leadership position over a squad of Inquisitors many times before— he could have just approached one of his teams and convinced them to follow him regardless of the chain of command. But he was a relatively new member. So he couldn’t do anything except plead with one of the Seven Cardinals of the Virtues.

Which was exactly what he was doing right now. The elderly man that stood before Kai was named Halton, and he was the Cardinal of Diligence. He was the first cardinal that Kai found, but as his Title suggested, he was a little bit difficult to work with at times.

That was why, unfortunately for Kai, the elderly man just hesitated. “I don’t understand, Inquisitor Kai, what exactly is the emergency here?”

“I don’t exactly know what it is,” Kai explained, shaking his head. “But I sensed an overwhelming surge of death magic in the southern quadrant of the outer city!”

“A surge of death magic? Do you mean an Avatar of Death showed up here in Albus?” Halton stared at the Inquisitor in disbelief.

Kai just shook his head, repeating himself. “I don’t know, all I know is that it’s not something I could deal with myself. I’ll need a team to accompany me to investigate whatever this is.”

“Are you absolutely certain about this, Inquisitor Kai?” Halton furrowed his brows as he paced back and forth. “If an Avatar of Death has truly appeared in Albus, it would be unprecedented. In the over ten years since they’ve first appeared, not a single one of them has dared to approach the city.”

Kai grimaced— talking to Halton felt like pulling teeth. Even if he was one of the Seven Cardinals of the Virtues and one of the most respected individuals in the Church of Life, Kai would have preferred if he had found one of the other Seven Cardinals instead of Halton. Preferably Michael the Cardinal of Kindness.

Michael would be the easiest of all the Seven Cardinals to get to cooperate. Certainly, he’d be far easier to work with than Halton who cared too much about following protocol.
